After Surgery Care

Help at Home After Surgery or a Hospital Stay

Coming home is a relief, but after surgery care at home is often what makes the first days and weeks manageable. Simple things like getting out of bed, showering, and making a meal take more effort than you expect.

Our Registered Home Care Aides handle the daily tasks so you or your loved one can rest and recover safely.

What After Surgery Care at Home Includes

  • Help getting in and out of bed, chairs, and the shower
  • Bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Walking assistance to help prevent falls
  • Meal preparation and light housekeeping

Care Can Often Start the Same Day

Discharge plans can change quickly. Call us before you come home, or on the day itself, and we can usually arrange a caregiver the same day.

As Much Help as You Need

Care ranges from a 4-hour visit to overnight or 24-hour care. As you get stronger, the hours can be reduced to match.

Short-Term Care, No Contract

Many clients need help for only a few weeks. There is no long-term contract, so care can end as soon as you are back on your feet.

Sent Home With Home Health?

Home health nurses and therapists come for short, scheduled visits. They do not stay to help with meals, bathing, or getting around the house. Home care fills those hours, and the two often work side by side. Read our guide to home care vs. home health.

Getting Your Home Ready Before Surgery

If your surgery is planned, a little preparation makes the first week easier.

  • Clear walkways of throw rugs, cords, and clutter
  • Move everyday items to waist height so you do not have to bend or reach
  • Set up a place to sleep on the main floor if stairs will be hard
  • Stock the kitchen with easy meals and groceries
  • Arrange your ride home and rides to follow-up visits
  • Line up your caregiver ahead of time so help is there when you arrive

Common Questions About After Surgery Care at Home

Do I need a doctor’s order?

No. You or a family member can call us directly and arrange care without a referral.

Does Medicare pay for it?

Medicare may cover home health services such as nursing and therapy visits when you qualify. It generally does not pay for non-medical home care such as help with bathing, meals, and getting around. We accept private pay and long-term care insurance.

Who oversees my care?

A nurse visits your home for the free evaluation, reviews your discharge instructions, and builds your care plan. A nurse is also on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if questions come up during your recovery.

Who are your caregivers?

Every caregiver is a Registered Home Care Aide with the State of California, background checked, TB tested, and trained every year. Experienced In Home Care is a licensed Home Care Organization (HCO #374700153), bonded and insured.

Can you help after a hospital stay that was not surgery?

Yes. The same help works for anyone coming home from the hospital, whether after an illness, a fall, or a stroke. Learn more about our stroke care at home.
